Puja
Puja is a religious ritual performed daily and additionally on special occasions to bring together the deity and the worshipper. God being unreachable to any of human senses, puja was devised as a method to bring god into the realm of senses. Puja thus bonds the devotee to the deity.
Puja is modeled on the idea of giving a gift or offering to a deity or important person and receiving their blessing. There are many variations in scale, offering, occassions, and ceremony.
Puja is done on a variety of occasions and settings, from daily puja done in the home, to temple ceremonies and large festivals, or to begin a new venture.
Puja can just be a simple remembering of the god or it can be ritual, song, invocation etc. or combination of these. Puja consists of meditation (dhyan), austerity (tapa), chanting (mantra), scripture reading (svadhyaya), offering food (thaal) and prostrations (panchanga or ashtanga pranama, dandavat).
